Even MORE kudos for Mongabay.com!!!

Based on a recent post where I realized that a Mongabay.com fish profile had a typo or error on one of the profile, I took a few minutes to send them an email.

Much to my surprise, I heard back from them within the hour. Here is their reply, followed by my email to them. I am always impressed when a HUGE website replies to an email... much less replies so quickly. I'm not sure if this is the actual owner replying or one of his employees but according to the website, the owner of Mongabay.com is Rhett Butler and this email was "signed" by him.

I have to say, they just earned even more respect in my book!

Here is the actual email reply -------------------

Thank you Lenny.

I made the correction. Let me know if you ever find any errors or would like to contribute other information to the site.

Best regards,

Rhett

I am an advanced member and daily contributor to various fish keeping forums. I am always telling people to go to http://fish.mongabay.com/ to do their research on their fish or give them the actual fish profile or other information.

While "researching" the subject matter, I believe the referenced Mongabay profile needs to be updated since the Mongabay profile shows this fish only growing to 18" whereas it actually grows to 36" and some say up to 48" (See References below).

I don't like to see errors or typos on Mongabay as I preach to everyone how good your site is.

Fish Compatibility Charts & Fish Profile Sources

When I'm doing research on a potential new fish or one of my current fish, I use several different sites since each one has different information. Please feel free to add your own favorite research site and I'll edit it into this main post.

I start with these General Compatibility Charts just to get an idea on whether the prospective fish or aquatic life are even remotely compatible:

http://www.liveaquaria.com/general/fwcompatibility_chart.cfm

http://www.ratemyfishtank.com/freshwater_compatibility_chart.php

http://www.tropicalfishandaquariums.com/Compatibility/index.php

http://www.aquaria.info/modules.php?op=modload&name=database&file=index_species (More of an advanced search for species based on water parameters, etc.)

Here is a download chart in Excel/Spreadsheet format that has tons of information about various fish, compatibility, etc.:

http://www.klsnet.com/fish.html or http://www.grizzlyrun.com/petedu/fishchrt.xls

Sorry.. the above two links no longer work but I did download these files a while back and I now have them hosted on my FileFront account so you can download them here....

http://files.filefront.com/13416948 (ODS file for Sun's Open Office)

http://files.filefront.com/13416958 (XLS file for MS Excel)

(If you don't have MS-Excel, you can download a viewer from MS or if you want a FREE full service MS-Office type suite, go to Sun Micro's http://www.openoffice.org/ and download their full suite which will allow you to create, view and edit MS-Office documents.)

This page has a few downloadable fishkeeping related programs... mostly Freeware... and includes two programs under the Software Column of links, for Fish Compatibility named "Can I Keep It?" and "More Can I Keep It?". I haven't checked these out yet but they were recommended by an advanced member of fishforums.net. There are also some other fish related freebie programs on the site. I'm not sure if this is Neal Monk's site but I see "nmonks" in the URL and he has been writing articles for a while about fish. http://homepage.mac.com/nmonks/software/index.html

NOTICE: ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT COMPATIBILITY CHARTS ARE SUBJECT TO MANY VARIABLES AND MAY NOT BE AS ACCURATE AS YOU WOULD LIKE SINCE OTHER FACTORS IN YOUR TANK/SETUP MAY INFLUENCE FISH BEHAVIOR. WHEN A CHART SAYS TWO FISH ARE COMPATIBLE, IT MAY NOT BE CLEAR IN SAYING THEY NEED TO BE IN A HUGE TANK SO THEY EACH HAVE THEIR OWN TERRITORY. PLEASE CHECK YOUR TANK SETUP AND COMPATIBILITY IN A COMPETENT FORUM BEFORE RELYING SOLELY ON A CHART. LAST BUT NOT LEAST... REMEMBER THAT THE FISH DO NOT ALWAYS READ THE SAME THINGS WE DO SO THEY MAY NOT KNOW THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO ACT A CERTAIN WAY. ;-)

You can also get some "expert" advice on compatibility by visiting me and the many other fine folks at the one of the forums at the top right.

While getting live advice and suggestions is nice, I also check one or more of these sites for more specific details on the actual fish to learn the preferences and compatibility issues:

http://fish.mongabay.com/ (Use Search)

http://www.aquatic-hobbyist.com/freshindex.html

http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/Fishindx/fishindx.htm

http://www.aquaria.info/modules.php?op=modload&name=database&file=index_species

http://www.tropicalresources.net/TR_profiles/ (Use Search if needed)

http://www.fishbase.org/search.php?lang=English (Use Search)

http://www.liveaquaria.com/ (Use Search)

http://www.fishindex.com/

http://www.fishprofiles.com/profiles/ (Use Search)

http://www.aquariumfish.com/aquariumfish/Species_List.aspx

http://freshaquarium.about.com/cs/fishspecies/l/blfishlibrary.htm

http://www.aquariumfish.net/indexes/indexes.htmhttp://futurepet.com/cgi-bin/search.exe?BP=1&RCAT=300

http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/ (For Good Catfish & Pleco Profiles using various search options)
http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/common_names.php (Using Catfish/Pleco Common Names)

Here is a general compatibility article:

http://www.aquariumpros.com/articles/compatibility.shtml

There are many sites that I also use for information on Goldfish, such as:

http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/ponds/Wilkinson_1Goldfish.html (Best Overall Article I've Ever Seen On Goldfish Care)

http://www.goldfishparadise.com/

http://www.thegab.org/

http://www.goldfishinfo.com/

http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/pfk/pages/coldwater.php

http://www.waterlife.co.uk/waterlife/goldfish-guide.htm

http://www.koivet.com/

Between all of those "Fish Species Information" sites, you should find plenty of information to help you with setting up a tank with compatible species. If you still need more, use http://www.google.com/ and enter your species common name and/or scientific name.

There are many specialized sites on specific fish like Cichlids, African Dwarf Frogs, Snails, Plecos & Catfish, Shrimp, etc., and I'll be adding to this list as I go through my Favorites folder on my computer.

You are doing the right thing by researching your prospective fish first!

Thanks for visiting.

A to Z of Fish Keeping: "How-To", Training and Information for New Fish Keepers and Experts alike!

http://tinyurl.com/A-To-Z-Of-Fish-Keeping

NOTICE - PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ASK LOTS OF QUESTIONS IN FORUMS LISTED TO THE RIGHT WHERE YOU WILL FIND ME OR MANY OTHER EXPERIENCED FISH KEEPERS. YOU CAN ALSO POST COMMENTS AT THE BOTTOM AND I WILL ANSWER YOUR QUESTION(S) HERE ON MY BLOG.

THE TOP TWO PROBLEMS FOR BEGINNERS - 1) OVERSTOCKING YOUR TANK and 2) THE NITROGEN CYCLE (Commonly called New Tank Syndrome). Scroll down a little for two free online fish keeping tutorials that will walk you through all of the basics and then there is also a free online beginner quiz to see how well you are doing.

Here are the answers to both of those problems:

DO NOT OVERSTOCK YOUR AQUARIUM: A BETTER SET OF GUIDELINES TO REPLACE THE FISH-KILLING 1" PER GALLON RULE THAT IS MISUSED AND MISUNDERSTOOD SO OFTEN - http://goldlenny.blogspot.com/2007/02/new-rules-guidelines-to-replace-1-per.html

NEW TANK SYNDROME / THE NITROGEN CYCLE: WHILE IT WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH BETTER FOR YOU AND YOUR FISH IF YOU WOULD HAVE DONE A "FISHLESS CYCLE" OR Dr. Tim's Comparison Article OR http://www.skepticalaquarist.com/docs/startover/fishless.shtml ON YOUR TANK OR USE DR. TIM'S ONE AND ONLY, http://www.drtimsaquatics.com/productguide/H2O-PURE_Products/H2O-PURE_Products.html. DR. TIM WAS THE INVENTOR OF A PRODUCT FORMERLY KNOWN AS BIO-SPIRA WHICH IS NOT AVAILABLE IN IT'S ORIGINAL FORMULA. IF YOU ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM, THEN YOU ARE "STUCK" WITH "CYCLING WITH FISH". GO TO ONE OF THE FORUMS I HAVE LISTED ON THE RIGHT TO GET MORE INFORMATION ON "CYCLING WITH FISH".

IF YOU ARE NOT HAVING THOSE PROBLEMS, GREAT!!! THEN START HERE:

BEGINNERS TUTORIAL - START HERE -http://faq.thekrib.com/begin-intro.html
This is one of my favorite places to send new fish keepers as they can learn about the various aspects of fish keeping by following all of the links in this tutorial. Pay particular attention to "The Nitrogen Cycle", "Fishless Cycling" (recommended), "Cycling With Fish"(not recommended but you may already be stuck with this) and Basic Water Chemistry but please read over all of the other links as well and feel free to ask lots of questions at the forums I have listed to the right, where you will usually find me or many other experienced fish keepers.

And if you want to learn even more, here is another tutorial site - http://badmanstropicalfish.com/basics/basics_aquariums.html

And if you feel you are doing well already, take this online quiz to see how you do.

If you have any questions, please feel free to look for me at the forums listed above.

TOP TEN REASONS TO FISHLESS CYCLE -
(A little humor to help emphasize this very serious matter)
http://board.fishchannel.com/Topic69655-5-1.aspx

The old link was http://www.aquariumfish.com/aquariumfish/board/Topic69655-5-1.aspx  but when AF changed to FishChannel, the old links no longer work.

FISHLESS CYCLING TIP!!! - I know a common complaint is people not being able to find the 10% Ammonia Hydroxide (clear ammonia) at their local stores but I recently saw online that Ace Hardware sells their own brand for around $2.00 a quart. Here's their online link to buy it by the case... but the stores sell individual units. http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1307957&cp=&fbn=Brand%7CAce+Hardware&f=Brand%2F19262%2F&fbc=1&kw=ammonia&parentPage=search&searchId=18414252422

Another source of "ammonia", if you cannot find the plain ammonia at your local stores, is to look in the spice or baking section of your grocery store and get some Bicarbonate Of Ammonia or Powdered Baking Ammonia which can be used in place of the plain ammonia. This will also raise your alkalinity and KH but when you do your large water change after the fishless cycle is complete, you will get rid of the excess KH and nitrates at the same time.
